Stu Gillard, your new Nordic Committee Chair with a quick introduction. I’ve been an avid Nordic skier for many years and still have my first pair of hickory XC skis and can of pine tar. I recently finished up 6 years as the Director of the Delaware Valley Ski Patrol http://www.dvsp.org that patrols the state parks of NJ and Alpine patrols NJ and PA downhill ski areas.
The King of Prussia Ski Club recently ran two very successful Nordic ski trips to High Point State Park and Minnewaska State Park all outlined for any ski club to replicate at this link. These destinations are all with in a 3-hour drive of EPSC land that gives participants plenty of flexibility. KOPSC is exploring Crystal Lake in Hughesville PA and Saranac Lake NY for the next 2017 XC ski trip.
The formula for a great club XC weekend is simple; trip leader imagination, scenic trails, XC rental equipment close by, excellent food at your classy group dinner and two comfortable nights lodging in a cute village all for around $200. XC Ski Trip leader imagination and creativity is essential because you are trying to get 20+ skiers to go to a ski area where they don’t make snow and there are no lifts. A fantastic fun winter weekend for less than ½ the price of a downhill ski weekend.
There is a future in Nordic skiing! EPSC club trip planners should investigate the Nordic Skiing options for all their Alpine trips. Presenting convenient XC Nordic ski options will attract additional participants to trips that are always a challenge to fill. Nothing sadder than an empty bus seat to a beautiful destination for an exciting weekend with a fun group.
Many downhill ski areas have superb Nordic skiing close by allowing club trip goers easy access through a short hike or quick shuttle ride. Easy for trip leaders to manage allowing the XC skiers to swap a XC trail pass for a downhill ticket. Perfect Alpine/Nordic destinations are Sun Valley, Whistler, Jay Peak, Stowe VT, Sugar Bowl-Royal Gorge Lake Tahoe, Sunday River ME, Big Sky MT, Lake Placid NY and many many more…………
So regularly visit the EPSC Nordic page to check on the EPSC Club Nordic XC Skiing adventures and recommendations & ideas for your future Nordic events……………
See you on the trail, Stu
